Asian Stocks Lack Direction to Start 4Q

0009 GMT — Asian stocks have opened mixed to welcome a new month and quarter, with markets Down Under lower and those in Northeast Asia higher. Korea’s Kospi rose an initial 0.3% as Samsung has rebounded some after Friday’s slide resulted in the country’s market underperforming regional gains to end September. Meanwhile, in Japan the Nikkei rose 0.1% with the dollar earlier hitting highs last seen in November against the yen. But New Zealand’s NZX 50 is down 0.4% in early-afternoon action following yesterday’s arrival of daylight-saving time.
